Choosing a research topic ?

Part 1  Explore your research guide

Go to the research guide for your program/major (or one that interests you, if you are undecided on your major). Explore the guide’s sections. In a full paragraph, tell us what you found in or learned from your research guide.  What might you find particularly useful in the future?

Part 2 Choose your topic

Start thinking about a topic that you would like to explore in this course. Your topic should be something that interests you as you will be working with the topic for your upcoming assignments, including the final paper. It’s best if your topic is related to your program (field of study). Looking at the research guide may give you some ideas.

To help you understand what you will be doing with this topic, go to the Assignments area of classroom and read the instructions for each assignment. Review the templates and samples that are attached there as well.

In your initial post, describe the topic and how you might explore it.

Responding to Others

When you respond to other students, you can:

  • Share thoughts about the research guide exploration.
  • Ask them questions about their choice of topic.
  • Ask them about key concerns, target audience, or the kind of sources they might use.
  • Provide respectful feedback.
  • Extend the conversation, exploring topics in creative and constructive ways.

Specific Guidance: Your initial response should be posted in full by Thursday evening, 11:59 p.m. ET. Reply to at least two students’ initial posts by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. ET.
